Winter Prep

hannahgabrick

After our return from Alaska and once all our health was restored we began prepping for winter. Kind of like how squirrels gather nuts, well we gather firewood. Since our house has a wood fired stove that we will be using for heat we needed to make sure we were stocked up on wood. My parents also heat their house with a woodstove so we planned out pretty much every weekend in October to help them clear trees, split logs and stack wood. Not only did we get a lot of trees cut and stacked we also hauled probably 10 truck loads if not more of dry wood from a family friend's house to my parents. They kept half and we got the other half to take home to add to our stockpile.

Heating your house with a woodstove requires a good amount of work. In the summer and fall you need to stockpile what you think you will need for the following year as wood needs to dry for a year or so before you can burn it. Throughout the winter you will be moving that same firewood once again when you take some loads of it into the house so you don't need to carry it every day.

We built this nice rack for next to the stove to store the wood until we need it. It is super handy since we added wheels to the bottom of it so we can easily roll it to the door to be filled and the move it back to its spot when we are done.

Though there was a lot of work to be done this fall we still tried to make time to just enjoy the weather and to have some fun. I worked on taking Moonshine out for short rides with her mom. She got to trot along with us as we walked around the property. I think she quite enjoyed it and it helped build her confidence. She spent most of the time leading the way and would zoom up ahead and then race back to us.

Her color has also changed quite a bit in the last few months, I am very curious to see how she sheds out in the spring.
